The Art of Meiji Satsuma
Between the Vienna Exposition of 1873 and the San Francisco Exposition of 1915, a small number of Japanese decorators in Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Yokohama and Kagoshima produced overglaze-enamelled earthenware of extraordinary refinement. Louis Lawrence called these the finest tier of Satsuma, distinct from the mass-produced export wares.
